چکیده

Semantic Web applications and knowledge-based systems heavily rely on the use of up-to-date ontologies. To support their adequate evolution, methods must detect the changes of meanings in concepts over time. This article proposes exploiting domain-specific external source of knowledge to characterize the evolution of concepts in dynamic ontologies. Our original technique analyses the evolution of values in concept attributes. The approach uses ontological properties and mappings between ontologies from online repositories to deduce the nature of the relationship between a concept and its successive version. The proposed algorithm is experimentally evaluated comparing different configurations by using various successive versions of biomedical ontologies. The obtained results reveal the benefits of considering external sources of knowledge to identify the correct semantic relation in ontology evolution.

Extending an ontology alignment system with BioPortal: a preliminary analysis

Ontology alignment (OA) systems developed over the past decade produced alignments by using lexical, structural and logical similarity measures between concepts in two different ontologies. To improve the OA process, string-based matchers were extended to look up synonyms for source and target concepts in background or external knowledge sources such as general purpose lexicons, for example, Wo...

Literature Mining for the Discovery of Hidden Connections between Drugs, Genes and Diseases

The scientific literature represents a rich source for retrieval of knowledge on associations between biomedical concepts such as genes, diseases and cellular processes. A commonly used method to establish relationships between biomedical concepts from literature is co-occurrence. Apart from its use in knowledge retrieval, the co-occurrence method is also well-suited to discover new, hidden rel...

Discovering relations between indirectly connected biomedical concepts

BACKGROUND The complexity and scale of the knowledge in the biomedical domain has motivated research work towards mining heterogeneous data from both structured and unstructured knowledge bases. Towards this direction, it is necessary to combine facts in order to formulate hypotheses or draw conclusions about the domain concepts. This work addresses this problem by using indirect knowledge conn...
